What is Sinusitis?
The sinuses are a network of air-filled spaces in the bones of the face and skull. When the lining of these spaces becomes inflamed or infected — often triggered by a cold, allergies, or environmental irritants — the result is sinusitis. Symptoms can range from a short-lived bout of congestion and facial pressure to a chronic, recurring condition that significantly affects daily life.
Sinusitis is one of the most common reasons people visit a doctor, yet it is also one of the most commonly undertreated. Many patients cycle through repeated courses of antibiotics without lasting relief, because the underlying structural or inflammatory cause has never been properly addressed.
Common Symptoms of Sinusitis
- Facial pressure, pain, or fullness — particularly around the cheeks, forehead, and eyes
- Nasal congestion or blockage
- Thick nasal discharge, often yellow or green
- Post-nasal drip and throat irritation
- Reduced or absent sense of smell
- Fatigue, headache, or a general sense of feeling unwell
- Symptoms that keep coming back despite treatment
Acute vs. Chronic Sinusitis
Acute sinusitis comes on suddenly, usually following a cold or upper respiratory infection, and typically resolves within a few weeks with appropriate treatment. Chronic sinusitis is defined as inflammation lasting twelve weeks or longer, and often requires a more targeted approach to achieve lasting relief.
Diagnosis & Treatment
Dr. Benjamin Rafii evaluates sinus problems with a thorough history, nasal endoscopy, and when indicated, CT imaging to assess the sinuses in detail. In many cases, medical management — including nasal steroid sprays, saline irrigation, and targeted antibiotic therapy — is the right first step.
When structural issues are contributing to recurrent or chronic sinusitis, procedures can be performed. Depending on the specific situations, these can range from minimally invasive procedures performed right here in our Beverly Hills office, like balloon sinuplasty, to endoscopic sinus surgery in the operating room. When done by the right doctor with the right expertise and attention to detail, these procedures can provide lasting relief without the need for lengthy recovery.
