What is Laryngeal Cancer?
Laryngeal cancer is a malignancy arising from the tissues of the voice box (larynx). While it is a serious diagnosis, it is also one where early detection makes a profound difference — caught at an early stage, laryngeal cancer is highly treatable, and voice preservation is often achievable. This is why persistent hoarseness or unexplained voice changes lasting more than two to three weeks should always be evaluated by a specialist.
The most common risk factors include tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, and HPV infection. Laryngeal cancer most frequently arises from the vocal cords themselves, where even small tumors tend to cause early symptoms — making timely diagnosis more likely than in cancers that develop in less symptomatic locations.
Precancerous Conditions
Not all laryngeal lesions are malignant. Leukoplakia (white patches on the vocal cords) require biopsy to determine whether benign or malignant, and dysplasia (abnormal cellular changes) is a precancerous condition that requires careful evaluation, biopsy, and monitoring. Identifying and treating these lesions early is one of the most important ways to prevent progression to invasive cancer — and one of the most compelling reasons to seek specialist care for any persistent voice change.
Common Symptoms
- Persistent hoarseness or voice change lasting more than two to three weeks
- A lump or mass sensation in the throat
- Difficulty or pain with swallowing
- Chronic cough or coughing up blood
- Ear pain without an obvious cause
- Noisy or difficult breathing in more advanced cases
Diagnosis & Treatment
As a fellowship-trained laryngologist and head and neck surgeon, Dr. Benjamin Rafii brings a uniquely voice-centered perspective to the diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal cancer. Evaluation includes high-definition videostroboscopy and biopsy when indicated, with careful attention to both oncologic thoroughness and the preservation of voice and airway function.
Treatment is multidisciplinary and may include transoral laser microsurgery, radiation therapy, or a combination of approaches, coordinated closely with radiation oncologists and medical oncologists. Dr. Rafii's role is to ensure that every treatment decision reflects not just the goal of eliminating disease, but of protecting what makes your voice yours.
