When Swallowing Feels Wrong, the Right Diagnosis Is Key
Swallowing problems — known clinically as dysphagia — are more common than most people realize, and more serious than they are often given credit for. Yet they are frequently overlooked or poorly evaluated outside of specialty care. For patients who have been told their swallowing concerns are minor, or who have seen multiple providers without getting clear answers, a dedicated specialist evaluation can be a turning point.
As a fellowship-trained laryngologist, Dr. Rafii brings a depth of expertise in swallowing anatomy, function, and pathology that goes well beyond what general ENT or primary care can offer. The evaluation begins with a thorough history and head and neck examination, and when indicated, includes flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) — a direct, real-time assessment of how you swallow, performed comfortably in the office.
What We Evaluate
- Difficulty swallowing solids, liquids, or both
- The sensation of food sticking in the throat or chest
- Chronic coughing or throat clearing during or after meals
- Unexplained weight loss or changes in diet related to swallowing
- Swallowing concerns following stroke, neurological illness, or head and neck cancer treatment
A Collaborative Approach to Care
Swallowing disorders can be complex, and the best outcomes often require a team. Dr. Rafii works closely with a hand-selected group of swallowing therapists, gastroenterologists, and other specialists in Los Angeles to ensure every patient receives the level of care their condition requires — whether that means in-office treatment, surgical intervention, or a thoughtful referral to the right expert.
The goal is always a clear diagnosis, an honest conversation, and a straightforward path forward.
If something feels wrong when you swallow, you deserve a real answer.
