Earwax & Ear Cleaning

Expert evaluation and safe removal of earwax buildup.

What is Earwax Buildup?

Earwax — known medically as cerumen — is a natural and protective substance produced by the ear canal. In most people, earwax migrates out of the ear on its own without any intervention. But for some, it accumulates faster than it can clear, leading to a buildup that blocks the ear canal and causes uncomfortable symptoms.

Earwax buildup is surprisingly common and very easily treated — but it is important to have it removed safely and properly. Cotton swabs and home remedies can push wax deeper into the canal, worsen blockage, and in some cases cause injury to the eardrum.

Common Symptoms of Earwax Buildup

  • A feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
  • Muffled hearing or sudden hearing loss
  • Earache or discomfort
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Itching or an odor from the ear canal

Safe, Expert Removal

At our Beverly Hills practice, earwax removal is performed with the same level of care and precision we bring to every procedure. As an ENT surgeon, Dr. Benjamin Rafii uses a microscope and specialized microinstruments to safely and thoroughly remove even the most stubborn buildup — including in patients with narrow or challenging ear canals where standard removal techniques fall short.

If you have been told your earwax is difficult to remove, or if previous attempts at removal have been uncomfortable or incomplete, you are in the right place.
