What is Hearing Loss?
Hearing loss is one of the most common health conditions in the world — yet it is also one of the most frequently ignored. Many people wait years before seeking help, often because the change is gradual and easy to adapt to. But untreated hearing loss affects communication, relationships, cognitive health, and overall quality of life in ways that compound over time.
Hearing loss can be temporary or permanent, and can result from a wide range of causes — including earwax buildup, ear infections, fluid in the middle ear, noise exposure, aging, or underlying medical conditions. Identifying the cause is the essential first step, as some forms of hearing loss are very effectively treated while others require ongoing management.
Common Symptoms of Hearing Loss
- Difficulty following conversations, especially in noisy environments
- Frequently asking others to repeat themselves
- Turning up the volume on the TV or phone
- A sensation of fullness or blockage in the ear
- Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
