What is Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?
The Eustachian tube is a small channel connecting the middle ear to the back of the throat. Its job is to regulate pressure in the ear and drain any fluid that accumulates. When it doesn't work properly — a condition known as Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) — the result is a range of uncomfortable ear symptoms that can significantly affect hearing and quality of life.
ETD is often associated with allergies, sinus problems, or upper respiratory infections, but it can also occur without any obvious trigger. For some patients it is a temporary nuisance; for others it becomes a persistent, frustrating problem that doesn't resolve on its own.
Common Symptoms of ETD
- A feeling of fullness, pressure, or stuffiness in the ear
- Muffled hearing or a sensation of hearing underwater
- Popping, clicking, or crackling sounds in the ear
- Pain or discomfort, particularly with altitude changes
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Diagnosis & Treatment
Dr. Benjamin Rafii evaluates Eustachian tube dysfunction with a thorough history and ear examination at our Beverly Hills practice. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity, and may include nasal steroid sprays, decongestants, and allergy management. For patients with persistent ETD that has not responded to medical treatment, Eustachian tube balloon dilation — a minimally invasive in-office procedure — can provide lasting relief by gently opening the Eustachian tube.
