What is Hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormone, accelerating the body's metabolism and placing strain on multiple organ systems. It is most commonly caused by Graves' disease — an autoimmune condition in which the immune system overstimulates the thyroid — or by one or more overactive thyroid nodules. Left untreated, hyperthyroidism can have serious consequences for the heart, bones, and overall health.
Most patients with hyperthyroidism are initially managed medically by an endocrinologist, with options including anti-thyroid medications and radioactive iodine therapy. When these approaches are insufficient, not tolerated, or not appropriate, surgery becomes the definitive solution.
Common Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism
- Unexplained weight loss despite normal or increased appetite
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Anxiety, irritability, or difficulty sleeping
- Heat intolerance and excessive sweating
- Tremor in the hands or fingers
- Fatigue and muscle weakness
- A visibly enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)
Diagnosis & Treatment
Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed through thyroid function blood tests and imaging, typically in coordination with an endocrinologist. When surgery is recommended, careful preoperative preparation is essential — the thyroid must be medically optimized before an operation can be safely performed. Dr. Benjamin Rafii works in close collaboration with endocrinologists in the Los Angeles area to ensure every patient is thoroughly prepared for surgery, minimizing risk and setting the stage for the best possible outcome.
Surgical treatment — thyroidectomy — may involve removal of part or all of the thyroid gland depending on the underlying cause and clinical circumstances. As with all thyroid surgery performed by Dr. Rafii, intraoperative nerve monitoring and meticulous surgical technique are central to protecting the voice and achieving a cosmetically refined result.
