What are Thyroid Nodules?
Thyroid nodules are growths or lumps that develop within the thyroid gland — a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck responsible for producing hormones that regulate metabolism and energy. They are remarkably common, affecting up to half of all adults, and the vast majority are entirely benign. However, a small but important percentage of thyroid nodules require further evaluation to rule out malignancy — which is why any newly discovered nodule deserves proper assessment.
Most thyroid nodules are discovered incidentally on imaging performed for another reason, or felt as a lump in the neck. They rarely cause symptoms, though larger nodules can sometimes cause difficulty swallowing, a sensation of pressure in the neck, or changes in voice.
Common Symptoms of Thyroid Nodules
- A lump or fullness in the front of the neck
- Difficulty swallowing or a sensation of pressure
- Hoarseness or voice change — an important warning sign that warrants prompt evaluation
- Most nodules cause no symptoms at all and are found incidentally
Diagnosis & Treatment
Evaluation of a thyroid nodule begins with a thorough clinical examination and review of any prior imaging. Ultrasound is the primary tool for characterizing nodule size, composition, and risk features, and when indicated, fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is performed to assess the cells of the nodule directly.
